Tween-60, Polysorbate-60

CAS No.:

9005-67-8

Molecular Formula:

C64H126O26

Structure Formula:

Properties:

Tween-60 (Polysorbate-60) is an oil/water-type emulsifier. It is soluble in 40℃ water and organic solvents and insoluble in oil. Tween-60 HLB value: 14.9.

HLB stands for Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance. It is the hydrophilic or lipophilic physical property of a substance. Most are used to indicate the properties of a surfactant. Any substance has an HLB value (expressed by its surface energy). This is an important physical property of matter.

Generally, the HLB value is between one and forty. HLB has important reference value in practical application. Relatively low HL B values (low surface energy) tend to be lipophilic, and relatively high tend to be hydrophilic.

The HLB value is relatively high when the polarity is high, and vice versa. The HLB of the lipophilic surfactant is lower, and the HLB of the hydrophilic surfactant is higher. The hydrophilic-lipophilic breakpoint HLB is ten. An HLB of less than ten is lipophilic, and more than ten is hydrophilic.

HLB is mainly used to design/use/experiment with different surfactants to suit different applications.

The HLB of Tween-60 is 14.9. So it is insoluble in oil.
